Katherine + Brendan | Rosario Resort | PNW Documentary Wedding Photographer

On May 5, 2019, Katherine and Brendan celebrated their marriage in a most elegant way.  The Point Lawn at Rosario Resort is one of the finest viewpoints in the San Juan Islands for a destination wedding.  We took a side trip to Mount Constitution and Cascade Falls for some sweet shots amongst the incredible scenery on Orcas Island.

For me, I loved the little touches that were considered in the planning: the violinist at the ceremony, the paper design of the dinner menu, and the flower arrangements.  Take your time to drink in all the many details on this one.  Shout out to Cloud 9 Events for pulling it all together in a flawless fashion!

      Chelsea + David | 1.20.2019 | Seattle Documentary Photographer

Chateau Nighthawk is a unique step back in time.  Chelsea and David reserved the expansive cliffside home for an intimate weekend wedding with close family.  I feel honored to have been invited to document the occasion.  Cheers to this happy couple. Enjoy the story.

Katherine + Brendan are getting married! | San Juan Islands Engagement Session

I’m excited to be photographing this cute couple’s wedding this summer. Last week, we got together for a warm up shoot on a cold crisp day. A San Juan Islands engagement session is a great way to celebrate the decision to be together.   We had a blast walking around the icy lagoon looking for ways to snuggle, giggle and get silly on weird ice formations that were created in the last wind storm.

        Enjoy the story.

          Clay + Justin | My Brother’s Wedding | 9.30.2018

Don’t let anyone tell you that it’s wrong to let a family member take the photos of your wedding.

Photographing my own brother’s wedding couldn’t have been a bigger honor.  What a blessing to be so close to someone on the happiest day of their life.

          Congratulations Clay and Justin.

          Enjoy the story.

Meagan + Ian | Whales and Wedlock | Doe Bay Resort Wedding | 10.13.18

I was excited to hear about being invited to document the whale watching tour that took place before the wedding.  When so many  people are traveling from far off places, you want to do all you can to help them experience the magic of the San Juan Islands.  I can think of no better way to force feed them the raw magic of hanging out in the territory of whales.  Thanks Outer Island Excursions. An awesome experience and a beautiful day, it was.

Not to be topped by the whale tour, the Doe Bay Resort hosted an incredible wedding with the help of friends and family.  Lots of DIY and homemade touches came together by many loved ones.  They buzzed around bees. Meagan and Ian were super sweet and jerked some tears out of many of us.   A wonderful time.

            Enjoy the story.

              Kristen + Mark | 2 for 1 wedding | San Juan Islands Wedding | 9.28.2018

This is the longest blog post I’ve ever created but it just had THAT much beautiful stuff going on!  In the same day, I documented a private cliffside exchanging of vows followed by a spiritual ceremony surrounded by friends and family.  Snug Harbor Resort in the San Juan Islands was the perfect setting for this well thought out wedding.  Practically a DIY affair with no stone left unturned when it came to creating a scene with activities for everyone and pretty things to look at.  Flawless Victory.  Slow down and drink in the details on this one.

              Enjoy the story.

                Robyn + Derek | Rosario Resort Wedding | 9.15.2018

Can a wedding get any cuter and smaller than this?  I don’t think so.  The cake was half eaten the night before and of the seven chairs provided on the Point Lawn, only four were actually needed.  The grandfather was cracking everyone up while saying the sweetest words and best tips for a successful marriage.  I loved it.

                  CB + PM | Wellspring Spa Wedding | October 6th, 2018

On a chilly October day on the flanks of Mt. Rainier, a beautiful event was taking place deep in the woods.  CB and PM made a lifelong promise among a loving group of friends and family.  The wedding ceremony was preceded by a traditional Chinese tea ceremony to honor all the elders who have helped bring them this far.  After a great feast provided by Ramblin Jacks, the day turned into night as the laughs accompanied fun dancing and photobooth shenanigans.  It was a long anticipated day after getting to know them a few months prior for the engagement session.  The Wellspring Spa and Retreat can accommodate over 100 guests throughout its 10 acre sanctuary including use of its cedar hot tubs and saunas.  What a dreamy private venue for Pacific Northwest wedding!

Other shout outs are given to CORT for the tent and chair rental and the family members who handled the setup, decoration, arranged flowers, and managed the day.

                  Enjoy the story!

                    Alexis + Brant | Orcas Island Wedding | 9.8.2018

On September 8th, Alexis + Brant exchanged wedding vows at a private home on the shores of Orcas Island in the peaceful San Juan Islands of Washington. They are such a sweet solid couple with a promising future together. An Orcas Island wedding set in a single location (the Apfel Haus) and made possible by friends and family can be a laid back affair. I thoroughly enjoyed my time documenting the day and I hope you enjoy the story.

Kiley + Jesse | Doe Bay Resort Wedding | Orcas Island | 9.1.2018

The dreamy Doe Bay Resort on Orcas Island is one of the best multi day, friends from all over the place, destination wedding sites in America. Give it a serious gander if you are looking for a cool venue. There are plenty of ways for the guests to make lots of memories.  This place has it all! But you don’t have to take my word for it.  Here’s a little of what the bride and groom had to say about their expereince in a little segment I call, “He said, She said”

                      He Said:

I have been to a lot of weddings in my day, and without fail there is something that goes amiss. Our wedding went off without a hitch–I cannot remember a single thing that was out of place or that we had to compromise on so make the day happen. The weather was a dreamy summer island day. The vendors, location, and venue were all as beautiful as we hoped. There is no way this could have happened without the family and friends as generous and willing to pull the weight behind the scenes so we could have the day we imagined. When we considered getting married, we didn’t think in our wildest dreams that we could pull off such a beautiful wedding on Orcas Island–but because of all the support around us, we had a wedding we will always remember. -Jesse

                      She Said:

What amazes me most looking back on our wedding is how, even though we made a 3-night weekend trip out of it, it absolutely flew by. It was a whirlwind of the very best kind. I’ll always remember the raucous glee of the guests the night before the wedding, as some of our dearest friends and family met one another for the first time, and I assembled our wedding cake while everyone heckled me like I was on a cooking show and stole cake scraps. I’ll remember how much trouble I had falling asleep that night because I was so worried about all of the details I was forgetting, Jesse doing everything he could to soothe me to sleep, and then then incredible calm and sense of total happiness that came over me when I put on my dress and realized I was GETTING MARRIED to a person I love deeply, and the details weren’t that important. I’ll think back with amazement and gratitude about the different ways our friends and family pitched in cheerfully to make the whole thing happen — people setting tables, stringing lights, assembling the incredible wedding arch that my dad made, shredding pork with their hands, putting out snacks. My brother and sister-in-law/BFF Josh and Molly accomplishing a superhuman amount of work and never complaining once. I’ll remember how beautifully our friend Gigi played the piano as Jesse and I walked together to the ceremony spot, and how my sister Emily’s reading of the poem “For What Binds Us” by Jane Hirshfield moved me and felt so true to the love Jesse and I were celebrating. I’ll remember the sincerity of our vows and wiping tears from Jesse’s cheeks with the handkerchief I hid in my bouquet. The next day, a big group of us kayaked along the north shore of Orcas and it was exhilarating — the weather cooperated and the water wasn’t too choppy, and we saw harbor seals and birds and breathed the salt air. It was all over way too soon, and I remember crying happy and sad tears as we took one last look at the water from our ceremony spot before we caught a ferry home. For me, it was a weekend of pure magic. – Kiley

Marie Beth + Curbie | Lime Kiln Park Wedding | 7.21.2018

The day started out way up on top of a mountain overlooking the San Juan Islands Archipelago and Vancouver Island. The ceremony was right at sea level at the breathtaking Lime Kiln Park on San Juan Island.  A Lime Kiln Park wedding is probably one of the most dramatic wedding sites in the SJI that tops the list also in ease of access and simplicity. Afterwards, the party migrated to the amazing Coho Restaurant in Friday Harbor. I nipped into the private dinner and caught some fun (Texan) father in law antics.

In all, it was a beautifully relaxed kind of affair. A day full of laughs and a good mix of tears. A sweet union of two kind and gentle people. Congratulations Mary Beth and Curbie.  Enjoy the story.

Kyle’s proposal to Melody | PNW Wedding Proposal Location

This is the third time, in as many years, that I’ve been approached to photograph a PNW wedding proposal.  I relish the opportunity to help create a magical moment for an event so important one would take knee.  It’s an honor and a blessing to witness.

Kyle approached me about a week ago and we came up with a game plan make for a romantic weekend.  The hikes, the sunsets, the dinner plans….  It was gonna be great.  Well, the sun didn’t cooperate and I’m pretty sure it was awkward when he asked her to go walking down a drab beach on a blustering rainy evening on the way to a fancy dinner.

Melody and Kyle were not noticing of the rain once she said YES.  They were all smiles and giggles and I was smitten to be spending an extra 20 minutes watching them drink in the moment.

                              Enjoy the story.

Here’s a nice little walk I had with a freshly engaged couple.  Ahh young love.  After seeing these two together, I have confidence that they are perfect for one another.

Lopez Island is the perfect island getaway for a romantic weekend.  Might as well throw in a documentary photographer to capture the feeling.  I specialize in making shy people feel comfortable in the front of a camera and turning the meeting into a fun experience.

I look forward to being able to share the story of their wedding next year.

                                Enjoy THIS story until then.

                                  Enjoy the story.

14’s a party | Orcas Island Portrait Photographer

I’ve finally realized that the more people at a portrait session,  the harder I work.  14 had me on my toes.  Keeping images fresh and keeping everyone feeling involved is an awesome challenge. I refuse to let some shy person slip through the cracks.

Its teamwork though!  And this family was exactly the type of relaxed group that makes it all possible.

                                    Enjoy the story.

                                      Shotgun Wedding

Shotgun weddings are my new favorite things!

A phone call from my neighbor the day before the wedding ended with “Bring the whole family, we killed a pig!”

The bride and groom were particularly photogenic and were pushing the envelope in terms of getting me to think outside the box.   There was an air of aloofness around all the preconceived notions of a wedding. Fireworks, wheelbarrow full of sockeye, kids with guns, scooters, throw your scraps on the bone pile, pit latrines, and food fights.

Each side of the bride’s hair was cut by two different kids at the same time. It was topped by an antler headpiece. This wedding was fun.

So in the spirit of having fun, I really allowed myself to explore some new post processing looks in many of the images.  Went a little WILD you could say.

                                      Enjoy the story.

Island Time with the Hays Family | Seattle Portrait Photographer

I know Lopez Island like the back of my hand. San Juan, on the other hand, still hasn’t shown me all of her special beaches and trails.  On this photoshoot, I went for a new spot and it was really nice and private. Eagle Cove is a little county park gem on the way to Cattle Point. It is a worthy stop if you have a hankering’ to dip your toe in the Strait of Juan de Fuca.  This sweet family seemed to have a good time.

                                        Enjoy the story.

Marriage Proposal on a Lopez Island Beach | Engagement Portraits

Micheal approached me last month about being present for when he drops to one knee.  He and Danielle were planning a weekend in the San Juan Islands and I suggested some sweet beach hikes on Lopez.  He strategically told her that he had surprise booked them a dog photoshoot so that she would be looking nice.

And then, as they were “waiting” for the photographer to show up…he asked her!  I was there waiting behind the grass.  The rest is history.  Such a cute couple.  I could hear her crying in happiness from 80 yards away.

Their cute rock tumbling puppy was very photogenic but so was that diamond that had been in the family for almost 70 years now.

                                          Congrats Micheal + Danielle!

Today’s post highlights a pleasant stroll out to Shark Reef Sanctuary on Lopez Island with a sweet family.  My goal was to bring out their best smiles in natural poses.  Here are some that made me smile.  🙂

A Rosario Resort Romp | Orcas Island Portrait Photography

Here’s another delightful family’s afternoon in the San Juan Islands. One of my top choices for Orcas Islands portrait photography is Rosario Resort for its expansive grounds of varied landscaping and plenty of grass for the kids to play. With a museum on site, Rosario Resort remains welcoming to the general public even if you aren’t staying there.  My first impression when I met them was that everybody was looking sharp without looking too matchy-matchy.  Natural colors and muted tones always works in an outdoor shoot.  It prevents unwanted distractions from the subjects eyes, the window to the soul!   It was a great time.  Enjoy the pics.

My sweet friend, Tiffany, celebrated another lap around the sun.  I brought my camera along for poops and giggles.  I didn’t pick it up much between all the good talks and good food but I managed to capture a few good ones.
