Known as the “do not miss” thing to see/do on Lopez, Iceberg Point stands as one of the most magical of places that make the San Juan Islands so special. The hike to the point itself pass through so many different microhabitats that by the time you get there you are already satisfied. And then it hits you. The mighty Straight of Juan De Fuca looks like it is holding up the snowcapped Olympic range to the south. At that point you are standing in the center of the rainshadow of this mountain range and on most days you can observe it effects on the consistent wet weather systems that line up out on the Pacific. The Olympics part the soggy clouds and send those dreary things to less the less deserving peoples like…the suburbanites. So close, it looks like you can yell at someone hiking up the mountains that receive over 12 feet of rain a year. Iceberg Point gets about 17 inches. I’ve photographed it once before but the focus was on who I was sharing the experience with. Without this photo documentation of my life, I would never be able to go back and recount the changes of the season. For me, this basic element of nature, the seasonal cycles is so appealing and interesting to me. It keeps me coming back over and over again. This hike, is one of those that never disappoints anytime of year.
JessicaI love these photos and Iceberg Pt in the winter time. Our property borders Iceberg and you cross our property to access the point. These pictures are beautiful.
